MILTON, FL - One week after celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, extremist Governor Ron DeSantis (R) and Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. (R), strong-armed their way into Florida's classrooms, by eliminating AP history courses dedicated to the foundational teachings of African-American studies.
When asked about the Governor’s latest culture war, Santa Rosa County Democrats Communications Chair, B.J. Brunious said: “Every Florida educator should have the freedom to teach the truth of our history so that our students can learn from the past, make sense of the present, and prepare for the future. This latest stunt by Radical Ron is a deliberate attempt to distract us from his failure to deliver economic freedom to Floridians.”

This act of aggression towards Florida's teachers, of all backgrounds and zip codes, is one of many battles DeSantis waged against the people of Florida. He began with banning books in our children's libraries. In the wake of the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor he tried to take away our freedom to peacefully come together and have our voices heard. In the months leading up to his re-election, DeSantis attacked Critical Race Theory, a law school elective that our Republican School Board Superintendent Karen Barber acknowledged is not taught in Santa Rosa County Schools. On the heels of political attacks on Disney, Florida’s largest private employer, the Governor took aim at small business owners who host drag performances. Last week his culture war was gas stoves and this week it’s high school AP history classes.
We Democrats strongly condemn the actions of this Governor and we firmly believe that Ron DeSantis’ repeated attempts to turn Floridians against one another will ultimately lead to his political demise.
